Choosing Meaning Over Tradition
There are a lot of expectations around weddings. The traditions, the timelines, the venues. The things we're told a wedding day should include. But one of the things I love most about intimate weddings is that they give couples the freedom to create a day that feels completely their own.
For Z + J, that freedom led them back to Stobo Castle.
Returning to a Place That Meant Something
After 15 years together, they chose to return to a place that had become part of their story. Stobo Castle wasn't chosen because it was a traditional wedding venue. In fact, it's best known as a luxury spa retreat. Over the years, however, it had become a special place to Z + J. Somewhere connected to happy memories, time spent together and an important chapter in their relationship.
When they imagined celebrating their relationship, returning to Stobo just felt right.
One of the biggest advantages of planning an intimate wedding or elopement in Scotland is that you aren't limited by tradition. The place you choose doesn't have to be a dedicated wedding venue.
Unlike many parts of the UK, Scotland offers couples much more flexibility when it comes to where they can hold their ceremony. Rather than being restricted to licensed venues, you can choose a location that genuinely reflects your story together.
It could be somewhere you've travelled together. Somewhere you've always dreamed of visiting. A favourite city. A quiet beach. A historic castle. Or simply a place that has become woven into your story over the years. The best locations aren't always the obvious ones, they're often the places that mean something to you.
A Ceremony That Felt Like Them
Set against the backdrop of the Castle, their handfasting ceremony was relaxed, personal and full of meaning. Led by humanist celebrant, Ailsa McMillan, the ceremony was created around their story. It wasn't about following a script or ticking boxes, it was about celebrating the incredible journey they had shared together and the life that they had built together over 15 years.
The Joy of Doing Things Differently
That same philosophy carried through the rest of the day. No Expectations, no rules. Instead, they filled the day with things they genuinely love.
Matching jumpers. Bobble hats embroidered with their beloved fox red Labrador. A wild swim, then wrapping themselves up in matching dry robes and heading back to the castle to coorie in. Every detail felt personal because those details reflected who they are.
A Wild Swim to Celebrate
If there was a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the day, it was the wild swim! To some people, a wild swim might seem an unusual way to celebrate. For Z + J, it made perfect sense. It wasn't planned to make great photographs (although it certainly did), it was simply something they enjoy doing together.
One of the things I love most about elopements and intimate weddings in Scotland, is that they create space for moments like this, that feel personal and reflect who you are as a couple. Moments that couldn't belong to anyone else.

Days like this are a reminder that there's no right way to celebrate your love. Whether you're planning an intimate wedding, a handfasting ceremony or an elopement in Scotland, your day doesn't need to follow anyone else's rules. The most meaningful celebrations are often the ones built around the people, places and experiences that matter most to you. At the end of the day, the most memorable celebrations aren't usually the ones that follow traditions. They're the ones that tell your story.
